In a recent development, the City of Oxford has been awarded a Georgia ReLeaf Grant by the Georgia Forestry Commission and Georgia Tree Council. The grant is aimed at facilitating the planting of trees in Oxford. Oxford has been granted a sum of $7,550 for their efforts in planting trees within the Longstreet Circle subdivision.
In a recent development, the city arborist and an intern from Oxford College have successfully conducted a comprehensive street tree inventory for the city of Oxford. This initiative took place in 2022, marking a significant milestone for the city’s urban forestry efforts. A recent tree inventory revealed that the tree canopy cover in the Longstreet Circle subdivision is below average.
Oxford has successfully secured a Georgia ReLeaf Grant, receiving a generous amount of $7,550. This grant will be utilized for the purpose of tree planting in the development. The project was completed as the city acquired trees from Jack’s Creek Tree Farm and enlisted the services of Arbor Equity, Inc. to plant the trees on city-owned right of way within the development.
In an effort to preserve the well-being of the neighborhood, the Oxford public works department has announced plans to diligently care for the trees throughout the summer. This includes regular watering and mulching to ensure their continued health and ability to provide shade in the future.

The Georgia Tree Council (GTC) and the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) work together with the USDA Forest Service to oversee the implementation of the Georgia ReLeaf program. A new program has been launched in Georgia to provide funding for tree planting and tree giveaways. This initiative aims to support municipalities, government agencies, non-profits, and educational institutions in their efforts to increase the number of trees in the state.
At present, the primary focus of funding is directed towards projects that aim to benefit disadvantaged communities that are facing challenges such as low tree canopy and environmental justice issues.
The Town of Newborn has been awarded a Georgia ReLeaf Grant to host a tree-giveaway event on Arbor Day, which will take place on February 24 in Newborn. The town has been granted $2,081 in funding for this project. The Newborn Tree Board, in collaboration with the Putnam County Master Gardeners, is set to distribute 175 three-gallon containerized trees during the upcoming event. Join in the Arbor Day festivities at the Newborn Historic Schoolhouse, where you can enjoy lunch and live music from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
