Eligible seniors can now apply for the 2024 fresh produce benefit cards offered by the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries.

The department’s Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is funded by the federal government. Eligible seniors in Alabama can now receive a $50 benefit card to buy fresh fruits and vegetables from certified farmers at farmers markets and farm stands. This program aims to promote healthy eating among seniors and support local farmers.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be at least 60 years old on the day of application.

Applicants’ gross household income must adhere to specific limits:

  • $2,248 monthly for a household of 1
  • $3,041 monthly for a household of 2

According to the ADAI, individuals with a benefit card from 2023 will be required to provide their card number in order to renew the card and complete the application process. Every year, applicants are required to reapply for benefits. It is crucial to securely store the benefits card, as it will be updated with new benefits upon successful application submission.

How to use the benefit card?

When buying fresh fruits or vegetables from authorized farmers, simply present your benefit card as you would a debit or credit card.
