North Charleston High-speed Chase ends in crash on I-26

Authorities from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office have confirmed that an individual has been apprehended after a pursuit culminated in a collision on I-26.

The crash caused a blockage in the two left eastbound lanes at the Dorchester Road exit. However, authorities have reported that the scene has been cleared and the lanes have been reopened, as of just after 10:15 p.m.

A spokesperson for the police department, Cpl. Carli Drayton, reported that the incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. when a deputy initiated a traffic stop. A pursuit began after the driver failed to stop, according to her statement. The driver’s vehicle collided with a guardrail, prompting an investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, according to Drayton.

The identity of the individual currently in custody and the cause behind the attempted traffic stop have not been disclosed by authorities.

SCDOT cameras do not capture the crash incident, but they do provide footage of the foggy conditions in the vicinity. These conditions could potentially increase the danger due to the closed lanes.

Motorists in the vicinity are advised to exercise caution or seek an alternative route. According to Drayton, there were no reported injuries in the crash. The driver is set to be taken to the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.
