Emergency alert cancelled near fire area at central Alberta oil lease site

The emergency message that was sent out Tuesday night for areas in east-central Alberta near an oil lease site fire has been taken down.

At first, the warning was sent out because of bad air quality caused by toxic smoke from a fire at an oil lease site 23 kilometers southeast of Mannville, Alta. The update was made just after 7 p.m. MT says that the fire has been put out.

“There is no longer any toxic smoke being released from the fire,” the warning stated. It is 170 kilometers southeast of Edmonton to get to the town.

The shelter in place directive has been lifted, however, it is advised that the public still refrain from entering the area to ensure the safety of the crews currently working to resolve the situation, according to the alert.

According to a news release issued by the County of Minburn, a fire broke out at a privately leased site in the vicinity of Township Road 480 and Range Road 81. The fire engulfed four crude oil tanks.

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has received a statement from Lycos Energy Inc., informing them about a fire in an oil tank on a lease near Wainwright. The notification was made around 1:30 p.m. The fire was extinguished at approximately 6:45 p.m., according to AER.

“A statement from the AER confirms that inspectors are currently on-site, diligently monitoring the situation and working closely with emergency response teams and local authorities to prioritize public safety,” the report states. The AER will closely monitor the ongoing incident, ensuring that the company’s response and remediation efforts are thoroughly examined.
