US Navy Destroyer Shoots a Houthi-Claimed Missile in the Red Sea

Officials reported that a missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels was successfully intercepted by a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Red Sea. This incident marks the latest attack on American forces who are responsible for patrolling the important maritime route.

In a statement released by the U.S. military’s Central Command, it was revealed that the USS Gravely, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, was the target of a late Tuesday night attack. A statement confirmed that no injuries or damage were reported.

In a statement released on Wednesday morning, Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, a Houthi military spokesman, claimed responsibility for the attack. He described it as a triumph for the Palestinian people and a retaliatory action against the American-British aggression towards their country.

Saree reported that the Houthis have fired “several” missiles. something that has not been acknowledged by the U.S. Navy. Previous reports have indicated that Houthi claims may have been overstated, with instances of their missiles encountering difficulties and not successfully reaching their intended destinations.

On Monday, the Houthis made a claim, but provided no evidence, stating that they had targeted the USS Lewis B. Puller. This vessel serves as a floating landing base for the Navy SEALs and various other military units. The U.S. has officially stated that no attack has taken place.

In a series of attacks since November, rebel forces have been consistently targeting ships in the Red Sea due to Israel’s ongoing offensive against Hamas in Gaza. They have often attacked ships that have weak or unclear connections to Israel, putting shipping at risk in a crucial route for global trade spanning Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. A commercial vessel was struck by a missile on Friday, causing a fire that raged for several hours.
