Paramedic charged with rape following investigation

A New Castle County Paramedic has been charged with 4th-degree rape. According to County Police, authorities were notified last summer regarding a possible case of sexual abuse that took place between 2004 and 2006. A suspect has been identified by the alleged victim as Katherine Watts, a 41-year-old resident of Middletown. Watts was arraigned on Thursday and subsequently released on $5,000 unsecured bail.

According to police and EMS officials, there is no evidence suggesting that any of these incidents took place while Watts was in charge of directly caring for patients as a paramedic. However, the investigation is still ongoing and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of pressing further charges.

In July, Watts was put on administrative leave after EMS became aware of the allegations. She has been working for the county since 2006. In a statement released by County Police, Chief of the Emergency Medical Services Division Mark Logemann addressed the public:

The New Castle County Emergency Medical Services Division has been made aware of the criminal charges. After allegations came to light in July, Ms. Watts, a long-time employee of New Castle County since 2006, was promptly put on administrative leave by the EMS Division.
