Governor Greg Abbott of Texas recently voiced his displeasure with the legal restrictions that forbid shooting undocumented immigrants. Abbott made this contentious remark while appearing on a radio program hosted by Dana Loesch, a former NRA spokesperson.
The strict policies Texas has implemented to stop illegal immigration across the southern border were the main topic of discussion. Governor Abbott described the different tactics his government has used, such as building a wall along the border, erecting physical barriers in the Rio Grande, and passing state laws making crossing the border illegal.
The only thing Abbott mentioned that they weren’t doing, though, was shooting people who crossed the border because, naturally, the Biden administration would have accused us of murder. This comment has drawn a lot of criticism because it highlights how radical the Republican position on immigration is.
The emergence of such radical notions is not new. According to reports, former President Donald Trump and his advisor Stephen Miller recommended employing predator drones to target migrant boats and permit border police to shoot people in the legs. These incidents point to an increasing pattern of hostile language and anti-immigrant laws.

The latest lawsuit filed by the Biden administration against Texas makes things much more complicated. The complaint claims that a recent Texas statute that gives local law enforcement the ability to detain immigrants and permits judges to order their deportation violates federal jurisdiction over border control.
It is categorically forbidden and considered murder to kill unarmed persons, including migrants, under international, national, and state laws. Abbott’s shocking revelation that the only thing stopping such acts is the fear of legal ramifications is a reflection of the political atmosphere that surrounds immigration issues right now.
There is fear that these already divisive policies may get worse if former President Trump is reelected. Regarding American immigration, Trump has alluded to using his extensive executive authority to impose mass deportations and establish detention facilities. Such developments may weaken the precarious protections against the mistreatment of migrants.
