In an incident that unfolded in Nebraska’s largest city, two off-duty police officers took action by shooting and ultimately killing two individuals who were inside an SUV. However, authorities have been tight-lipped about the specifics surrounding the confrontation.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday, when two Omaha officers, who were on duty at a local business, discharged their firearms at the individuals inside an SUV. Two men, aged 26 and 28, were transported to a nearby hospital after sustaining severe injuries. Tragically, their injuries proved fatal.
Authorities have discovered a handgun inside the vehicle, however, they have not disclosed any information regarding its legality or the circumstances that prompted the two off-duty officers to open fire on the individuals. The police have not disclosed whether the two officers, whose identities remain unknown, identified themselves as law enforcement officials to the individuals involved, or if they were dressed in their official police attire.
Authorities have reported that during the incident, an officer was equipped with a body camera. As part of the ongoing investigation, detectives are currently examining security footage from nearby businesses.
Two officers have been placed on paid leave while an investigation is underway. An investigation is currently underway involving the police department’s officer-involved investigations team, the Nebraska State Patrol, and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The police department has yet to respond to an email inquiry sent on Sunday, requesting additional details regarding the shootings.
