A Maine woman gets 55 years in prison for stabbing her close friend almost 500 times.
It was reported in December 2023 that Kailie A. Brackett was found guilty of killing Kim Neptune, 43, in April 2022. The Associated Press said that Brackett was given a 55-year prison term on May 10 for her part in the crime.
During her sentence, Brackett, 39, said in a statement that she wasn’t to blame for Neptune’s death and that the woman’s killer or killers may still be on the loose, according to the AP.
Neptune was found dead in her home in Maine with 484 stab wounds. Her body was wrapped in a blanket. The victim’s brother called the police on the Passamaquoddy Pleasant Point settlement in Washington County.
A man named Donnell Dana was also charged with and tried for killing Neptune, but in December 2023, the trial was thrown out because the jury could not agree on a verdict.
Later, Dana admitted to the lesser charges of “hindering apprehension or prosecution for disposing of evidence related to Brackett’s murder charge,” according to the AP.
Brackett and Dana have a child together, and the Portland Press Herald said that Dana lived with Neptune before 2021.
“We’re relieved that justice was served. And then tomorrow and the next day and then so on, we’re going to start looking at different things of healing together as a community, as one,” Passamaquoddy Councilmember Adam Newell said after the hearing.
