Study Ranked the Most Walkable Cities in the US

Exploring a city by strolling through its winding roads and cobblestone streets, while stopping by restaurants and art galleries, is an excellent way to truly experience its charm. In car-centric metropolitans across the US, a walk from your hotel lobby may unexpectedly end in a parking lot.

According to Michael Rodriguez, Director of Research at the non-profit group Smart Growth America, Main Street Disneyland is considered one of the most walkable places in the United States and attracts a significant amount of tourism, as reported by Condé Nast Traveller. “It is evident that many Americans desire the same level of density, retail mix, vibrancy, and quality of life.”

In its 2023 Foot Traffic Ahead Report, Smart Growth America has compiled a comprehensive ranking of the most walkable cities in the US, providing valuable information for travelers looking for pedestrian-friendly destinations beyond the enchanting realm of the magic kingdom. A recent study has revealed the percentage of walkable areas in the 35 largest metropolitan regions in the United States. The study also provides rankings for these regions based on their walkability.

What are the key factors that contribute to a city’s walkability? According to Rodriguez, who co-authored the report, the final list is determined by combining two important walkability metrics: the EPA’s Smart Location Database and the American Enterprise Institute’s Walkable Oriented Development Database.

According to Rodriguez, the two databases calculate walkability scores by considering various factors. The primary factor is whether individuals can easily walk from their homes to important amenities like grocery stores, offices, and gyms. According to the EPA database, the city’s built environment is taken into account, including factors such as the distance between blocks and access to public transportation.

According to the Smart Growth America ranking, the density of development in an area is also taken into account. When buildings are constructed close together, it promotes walking. Some metro areas on the list, like Los Angeles, have a mix of highly walkable neighborhoods and areas that are not considered “walkable” overall.
