After “willfully” disobeying a judge’s order to stay away, the Seattle law student who was seen lurking outside Taylor Swift’s Manhattan apartment thirty times in the previous two months was ordered to be detained behind bars on Thursday.
When David Crowe, 33, learned that Judge Marisol Martinez Alonso was detaining him to Rikers Island after his arrest on Wednesday—the third time in less than a week that he had been brought into custody on Swift’s street—he said, “Your honor, no way.”
Around 1:30 p.m., Crowe, a law student at Seattle University, was seen on CCTV searching through a dumpster close to the megastar’s house. This was around one hour after Alonso had freed Crowe without bond on accusations of stalking and harassment.
About Alonso’s directive to stay away from the singer’s residence, Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Andrew Warshawer informed the judge during Crowe’s Thursday arraignment that he had “willfully disobeyed the order of protection issued by this court — and by your honor herself.”
Then he showed the time-stamped, photographic proof that identified Crowe as the witness, which the resident of Bolivar, New York, studied closely in Manhattan Criminal Court.
“The documents and photos available clearly show that the defendant is unable to comply with the court’s orders,” Warshawer stated, before requesting that Alonso either set a $100,000 cash bond or return the eerie lurker to Rikers Island.
The magistrate made the jail decision.
Alonso dismissed Crowe’s attempts to interrupt, saying, “Mr. Crowe, once again, I’m going to be issuing a temporary order of protection in favor of the named party.”
She went on, “I’m going to commit the defendant under custody and revoke the previous order I released you under.”
Crowe trailed off and muttered something about his “survival” after expressing shock.
Crowe’s public lawyer, Katherine Bajuk, asked that the man take a 730 exam to see whether he is mentally ready to stand trial.
The date was set for February 7 by the court, who agreed.
During Crowe’s arraignment on Wednesday, prosecutors disclosed that he had reportedly visited the “Bad Blood” singer’s apartment thirty times in the previous two months.
According to police sources, after taking the former Duke University computer science major into custody on Saturday, officers released him without filing any charges because they were unable to locate a complaint, a report, or any evidence that the man had committed a crime.
However, Crowe was seen outside the “Bad Blood” singer’s house on Monday night once more. This time, the authorities charged him with two counts of harassment, a misdemeanor, and fourth-degree stalking.
Prosecutors claimed that since the allegations did not qualify for bail, they have instead asked for the highest tier and degree of supervised release.
In addition, Crowe is now being charged with second-degree contempt for willfully disobeying the court’s directive by going back to Swift’s block following the hearing on Wednesday.
The criminal complaint states that he was given at least ten warnings by the building’s custodian to leave Swift’s home alone.
However, it stated that he visited 30 times between late November and January 22 despite this.
According to law enforcement officials, he was apprehended by police on Monday after a member of Swift’s security detail alerted officers who were cruising the neighborhood.
According to people who spoke to The Post, the complaint was backdated to November 25, 2023, which aids authorities in identifying Crowe’s purported harassing habit. According to a neighbor, Crowe has lived in the area since roughly Christmas. And on Wednesday, they were frightened when they saw him prowling around once more.
“It broke my heart,” the neighbor shared with The Post. “All I could think was, ‘Oh my god, this guy is back!’” All I want is to forget about this guy forever. He needs to move on from our little street, and I hope he gets the assistance he needs.
