Mayor of Summerton killed in a car crash

SUMMERTON, S.C. – The mayor of Summerton, Tony Junious, tragically passed away in a car accident on Saturday morning, as confirmed by Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell.

Junious, a resident of Summerton, made history by becoming the town’s inaugural Black mayor. A man of 48 years has passed away.

A crash occurred at 10:33 a.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Governor Richardson Road and Liberty Hill Road in Clarendon County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP).

A collision occurred when a Chevy Impala traveling west on Governor Richardson Road collided with a Dodge Charger traveling north on Liberty Hill Road. According to the Highway Patrol, the Chevy veered off the right side of the road and collided with a ditch.

According to officials, the driver of the Chevy was transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Dodge Charger was also taken to a hospital.

Junious has an extensive background in education, having served on multiple Clarendon County School Boards. In 2022, he was elected as the mayor, bringing his wealth of experience to the position.

According to a statement from the Clarendon County School District, Junious has been instrumental in implementing various programs that have positively impacted student life and education within the district.

The release stated that the legacy of the individual in question will serve as a source of inspiration for both current and future generations within Clarendon County Schools. “The efforts put forth by this individual in our schools and the city of Summerton are expected to contribute to the advancement of continuous improvement through economic growth projects and educational excellence.”

According to the Clarendon County School District, he was involved in various school activities, including volunteering, mentoring students, offering scholarships, and sponsoring dinners for seniors at Scott’s Branch High School.
