Following Friday’s ruling by a federal civil jury in the defamation case brought against former president Donald Trump by advice columnist E. Jean Carroll, Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley harshly criticized Trump.
“Donald Trump wants to be the presumptive Republican nominee and we’re talking about $83 million in damages,” Haley wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter, shortly after the verdict was announced.
“America can do better than Donald Trump and Joe Biden,” according to her.
It was in 1996 that Carroll said Trump sexually assaulted her in a department shop. In May of last year, a New York jury found Trump guilty of sexual assault and defamation, a case in which she had previously prevailed.
In her most recent lawsuit, she claimed that Trump had defamed her after he denied her sexual assault allegations in 2019. After many days of deliberation, the nine-person jury found the former president guilty and handed down severe punishments.
The president’s main rival, Haley, has stated that she “hadn’t paid attention” to Trump’s continuing legal challenges.
In an interview with CNN earlier this month, Haley stated, “All I know is that he’s innocent until proven guilty.” This was about the New Hampshire primary. “If he’s found guilty, then he needs to pay the price.”
