In a press release issued on Sunday morning, Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson announced the closure of two out of three warming centers that were opened as part of a Public Health and Safety Emergency Update. The closure was attributed to rising temperatures.
On January 26, three warming centers were established in response to an intense cold snap. These centers were located at the Golden Lion, Aviator Hotel, and the former Solid Waste Services administrative building.

During its peak operations, the Golden Lion warming center provided assistance to a total of 23 individuals within a 24-hour timeframe. Similarly, the Aviator warming center accommodated 32 people during its busiest period, while the CWS center saw a higher number of 68 individuals seeking shelter within a 24-hour period, according to Bronson.
The warming center at CWS will continue to operate throughout the emergency, as the Anchorage Assembly has extended it until Feb. 13.
