Idaho Falls Zoo announced death of long-time resident

In a somber announcement on Thursday, officials from the Idaho Falls Zoo shared the news of the passing of one of their beloved residents.

Aldabra tortoise Butros, a beloved member of the zoo, sadly passed away earlier this month, according to a post on the zoo’s official Facebook page.

Visitors to the zoo frequently caught glimpses of Butros and his companion Omar during the Behind the Scenes tours and Keeper Chats, held right by their habitat. The zoo reported that Omar is “doing great.”

A post described how he spent his days indulging in the simple pleasures of life – lounging in a pool, basking in the sun, and snacking on willow, hay, lettuce, and the occasional carrot.

Butros, who was approximately 150 years old, received dedicated and attentive care from the zoo’s staff during his last months. Officials expressed their hope that the slow and steady journey would serve as a reminder for everyone to appreciate the simple things.
