Although burial was the customary treatment of the dead among many people described in Scripture, there is no passage that says a person’s body must be buried in order for that person to receive salvation, resurrection, or eternal life. This distinction has caused considerable confusion because biblical burial traditions are sometimes interpreted as direct commands when they are actually descriptions of what people commonly practiced.

Several important biblical figures were buried, including Abraham and Sarah, and the New Testament describes Jesus being placed in a tomb after His crucifixion. Because of these examples, many Christians consider burial a meaningful way to honor the body. The Bible also contains instances where bodies were burned, but those passages occur under different circumstances and do not establish a universal teaching that every act of cremation is sinful.

The central Christian teaching about what happens after death focuses on resurrection rather than preservation of the physical body. Scripture teaches that God has the power to raise the dead, and nothing suggests that this power depends upon whether someone’s remains are intact. Human bodies naturally return to the earth after burial anyway, meaning that over enough time the physical body eventually decomposes regardless of how it was laid to rest.

For that reason, many Christian interpretations hold that choosing cremation does not prevent someone from being resurrected or change that person’s relationship with God. What matters spiritually is not whether someone’s remains become ashes through cremation or return to dust through natural decomposition. Families may therefore choose burial or cremation according to their convictions, traditions, circumstances, and understanding of Scripture.

So when someone claims that the Bible plainly identifies cremation as a specific sin, the text does not actually make that statement. Christians can hold different personal convictions about how a body should be treated after death, and burial certainly carries deep biblical symbolism, but Scripture provides no explicit command saying that cremation condemns a person. The biblical emphasis remains on faith, the life a person lived, and the belief that God’s power over death is not limited by what ultimately happens to the physical body.

The Bible does not contain a command declaring cremation itself to be a sin.
