The Funeral That Changed Everything

My husband had only been gone for a few hours, and I still felt like my mind had refused to accept reality. I stood beside his coffin surrounded by white flowers while my hand rested on my eight-month pregnant belly. My entire body felt numb. The church was packed with relatives, business partners, and people who had spent years praising Julián when he was alive. But the moment he was gone, everything changed. I barely had time to process my grief before my mother-in-law slowly walked toward me with cold eyes and an expression that made my stomach tighten with fear.

Doña Teresa looked at me as if I were a complete stranger. Then she dropped a stack of papers directly on top of Julián’s coffin and crossed her arms. “Pack your bags, incubator,” she said loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear. The whispers started immediately. My sister-in-law Fernanda stepped forward with a smile on her face and grabbed my hand. Before I even understood what was happening, she ripped my wedding ring from my finger so hard it scraped my skin. People watched in silence while they treated me like I was nothing more than a problem they needed to remove.

My legs felt weak as I looked around the church. Nobody defended me. Nobody said a word. The same people who used to call me family suddenly stared at the floor or pretended not to notice. Teresa walked closer and leaned toward me. “Everything belongs to us now,” she whispered. “The houses, the accounts, the company, the money. You were only temporary.” I felt my baby move inside me and tears started running down my face. I looked at Julián’s coffin wishing more than anything that this horrible moment wasn’t real.

Then something unexpected happened. A man suddenly walked through the church doors holding several legal folders and documents. It was Arturo, my husband’s lawyer. His expression was calm, but his eyes moved directly toward Teresa and Fernanda. Without saying much, he handed papers to several witnesses and quietly asked them to read them. The room slowly changed. People who had been whispering moments earlier suddenly became silent. Teresa grabbed the papers and her face immediately lost all color. Fernanda stared at her with confusion and panic.

Teresa’s hands started shaking uncontrollably. Julián had already prepared everything months earlier. Every property, every account, and everything he had built had been legally protected for me and our child. The papers Teresa had brought were exposed as worthless lies. The same people who had watched me suffer now looked at me differently. Fernanda slowly walked over and silently placed my wedding ring back into my hand. As I stood beside Julián one last time, I realized something. Even after death, he had protected us from the people who wanted to destroy everything he loved.
