My husband and I had just checked into our hotel after a long day of traveling. Everything seemed perfectly normal until I looked up near the top of the bathroom door and noticed something hanging from the frame. At first, I thought it was a piece of old insulation or maybe a strange decoration left behind by the previous guests.

The closer I looked, the more unsettling it became. It had a long, narrow tube attached to a small round structure, and inside the opening was a pale, shell-like object. We both stood there staring at it for nearly half an hour, trying to figure out whether it was alive, dangerous, or something we should report to the front desk.

After searching online, we finally discovered what it was. It was the cocoon of a potter wasp. These solitary wasps build small mud nests in sheltered places like door frames, sheds, garages, and even buildings that aren’t used very often. Inside the mud chamber, the developing wasp transforms from a larva into an adult before eventually chewing its way out.

Although finding one indoors can be surprising, potter wasps are generally not aggressive and rarely sting unless they feel threatened. In fact, they are considered beneficial because they help control garden pests by hunting caterpillars and other insects to feed their young.

What looked like something out of a science-fiction movie turned out to be a fascinating part of nature. Sometimes the strangest discoveries during a trip aren’t hidden tourist attractions—they’re tiny creatures quietly carrying out their life cycle right above our heads.
