Always Place the Fence With the Front Side Facing the Neighbor

When homeowners install a new fence, they often focus on the material, height, and color while overlooking one important detail—the direction it faces. Many experienced contractors recommend placing the finished, more attractive side toward the neighboring property. Although it may seem like a small decision, it can make a significant difference in both appearance and long-term relationships with those living nearby.

The finished side of a fence is designed to provide a clean, polished look by hiding the support rails and posts. Presenting this side to neighbors creates a more attractive shared boundary and shows consideration for the surrounding properties. In many neighborhoods, this approach has become a common standard because it benefits everyone who sees the fence.

There are practical reasons for this recommendation as well. In some areas, local building regulations or homeowners’ associations require the finished side of a fence to face outward toward neighboring lots or public streets. Installing a fence the opposite way could result in complaints, requests for modifications, or even the need to rebuild sections if they fail to meet local requirements.

Another advantage is security and maintenance. With the support rails located on the inside of the property, they are less visible from outside and are generally more convenient for the homeowner to inspect, repair, or repaint when necessary. This arrangement also gives the exterior a cleaner, more uniform appearance that can enhance the overall look of the neighborhood.

Before building a fence, it is always wise to review local regulations, confirm property boundaries, and discuss the project with nearby neighbors. Taking these simple steps can help prevent disputes, ensure the installation complies with local rules, and create a finished result that looks good from both sides of the property.
