Found in a House From 1907 — What Is It?

When this strange metal object was discovered inside a house dating back to 1907, its rows of sharp hooks immediately made it look more like an old-fashioned trap than an ordinary household tool. The circular frame, narrowing shape, and dozens of outward-facing metal points made its original purpose especially difficult to imagine.

The object is actually an antique bottle-drying rack, sometimes referred to as a bottle tree or bottle dryer. Before modern dishwashers and convenient countertop drying racks became common, devices like this provided a practical way to dry numerous glass bottles at the same time.

After bottles were washed, each one could be placed upside down over one of the projecting metal arms. Keeping the opening pointed downward allowed leftover water to drain instead of collecting inside the bottle. The open framework also allowed air to circulate around the glass, helping the bottles dry before they were filled or stored again.

Large versions were particularly useful in households that regularly reused bottles for milk, homemade beverages, preserves, or other liquids. Rather than throwing glass containers away, families washed and reused them repeatedly. A tall rack with many individual drying positions could therefore save considerable space and keep bottles organized.

So despite its intimidating appearance, this wasn’t a trap or some bizarre device for punishment—the object was an old bottle-drying rack. Its unusual shape reflects a time when reusable glass bottles were part of everyday household life, which explains perfectly why something like it could turn up in a home dating back to 1907.
