Jimmy Kimmel found himself at the center of another political controversy after delivering a joke about Melania Trump during a parody of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. During the April 23, 2026 segment, Kimmel complimented the first lady before joking that she had the glow of an “expectant widow.” The remark immediately targeted the age difference between Melania and President Donald Trump, but its meaning became far more controversial days later.

The situation changed dramatically after an armed attack occurred at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner two days later. Although Kimmel’s joke had been broadcast before that incident, critics argued that the wording sounded disturbing in light of what subsequently happened. Melania publicly condemned Kimmel’s rhetoric, while Donald Trump called for ABC to fire the late-night host.

Kimmel responded on his show and rejected the interpretation that he had been encouraging violence. He explained that the line was intended as a roast about Donald and Melania Trump’s age difference and their marriage. He also emphasized that the joke had been made days before the attack and said it was never intended as a reference to assassination or physical harm.

The controversy quickly became bigger than the joke itself. Critics argued that jokes involving death can cross a line when directed at political figures, while Kimmel’s defenders viewed demands for his dismissal as an excessive response to political satire. The dispute therefore reopened a familiar argument about where provocative comedy ends and irresponsible rhetoric begins.

Despite the backlash and calls for his removal, Kimmel continued hosting his program and defended the joke rather than apologizing for it. The remark was undeniably provocative, but one crucial detail remained clear: it was made before the later violent incident, not afterward, and Kimmel maintained that its target was the couple’s age difference rather than anyone’s safety.
