My Boyfriend Insisted on a Luxury Valentine’s Dinner

My boyfriend insisted on taking me to an expensive restaurant for Valentine’s Day, even though I told him several times that I would have been perfectly happy somewhere simple. He chose the restaurant, made the reservation, and spent the entire week telling me he had planned a special evening. So when the $380 check arrived and he suddenly told me to pay half, I was stunned. I refused, reminding him that the luxury dinner had been entirely his idea.

He stared at me for a moment, paid the full bill without another word, stood up, and walked out. I remained at the table, embarrassed and furious, wondering whether our relationship had just ended over $190. Then our waitress approached me holding a folded piece of paper. “I can’t keep quiet,” she whispered. “Your boyfriend actually left a note for you.”

My heart dropped as I unfolded it. The first sentence read: “I came here tonight with a ring in my pocket.” He explained that he had planned to propose after dessert, but before doing so, he wanted to know how we would handle disagreements about money. He wrote that my refusal wasn’t really about the $190—it showed him that we had never seriously discussed finances or what each of us expected from a future partner.

But the final lines surprised me most. He admitted that testing me during Valentine’s dinner had been immature and unfair. He had already decided not to propose that night because he realized a marriage couldn’t begin with a secret test. He asked me to meet him outside if I still wanted to talk, promising there would be no proposal and no games—just an honest conversation.

I found him waiting outside with the unopened ring box still in his pocket. We talked for nearly two hours about money, expectations, and how badly we had both communicated. We stayed together, but he didn’t propose that night. Three months later, after we’d learned to discuss those uncomfortable subjects openly, he asked me again—this time without a test, an expensive dinner, or a hidden note. I said yes.
