Finding something attached to your child’s scalp can be frightening, especially when it looks swollen and unfamiliar. The creature shown here is a tick, not an ordinary insect. Ticks are arachnids related to spiders, and after attaching to the skin and feeding on blood, their bodies can expand dramatically and become pale, gray, or beige.

The swollen appearance suggests an engorged tick, meaning it has been feeding for some time.
