Wheel of Fortune viewers were left debating a dramatic Bonus Round after contestant Steve Knapp walked away with more than $65,000 in cash and prizes. Knapp, a driver’s education teacher from Hampshire, Illinois, had already accumulated $20,400 before advancing to the final round, where one last puzzle stood between him and an even bigger payday.

Knapp selected the category “What Are You Doing?” and was given the standard letters R, S, T, L, N and E. He then chose G, C, M and A, leaving a puzzle that appeared as “G_ _ NG AN A_T_GRA _.” With the clock running, Knapp studied the board before giving his answer: “Giving an Autograph.”

Host Ryan Seacrest immediately accepted the answer, and Knapp celebrated as the completed puzzle appeared. The prize envelope contained a Nissan Z valued at more than $45,000. Combined with his earlier winnings, the victory brought his final total to an impressive $65,800 in cash and prizes.

But the controversy began after the episode aired. Some viewers insisted they initially heard Knapp say “Getting an Autograph” instead of “Giving an Autograph,” which would have been incorrect. Others replayed the moment and concluded that he really had said “Giving.” The disagreement quickly turned what looked like a straightforward victory into a puzzle debate of its own.

In the end, Knapp’s answer stood and his $65,800 victory remained intact. The contestant himself later described the experience as a bucket-list moment and confirmed that he had successfully worked out “Giving an Autograph” during the pressure of the Bonus Round. One tiny difference between two similar-sounding words was enough to leave viewers arguing long after the wheel stopped spinning.
