What Those Two Lower Back Dimples Reveal

Have you ever noticed two small indentations just above your hips, near the base of your spine? These little marks, sometimes called back dimples, have fascinated people for generations. Some individuals have them prominently, while others barely notice them at all. They are often especially visible when someone bends forward or wears clothing that exposes the lower back. Although they might appear mysterious, these natural indentations have a surprisingly simple anatomical explanation, and understanding their origin reveals something interesting about the way the human body is structured.

The two indentations are commonly known as the “Dimples of Venus,” a name inspired by Venus, the Roman goddess of beauty. When similar markings appear on men, they are sometimes referred to as the “Dimples of Apollo.” They form near the posterior superior iliac spines, two bony landmarks located at the back of the pelvis. Short connective tissue attachments between the skin and underlying structures help create the visible depressions. Their appearance depends largely on individual anatomy, genetics, and the distribution of tissue around the lower back.

One reason these dimples attract attention is their association with the natural contours of the body. In some individuals, the indentations become more noticeable when surrounding body fat decreases or muscle definition increases. However, having visible back dimples does not automatically mean someone is healthier, stronger, or more physically fit than another person. Likewise, people without them can have excellent posture, strong muscles, and outstanding physical conditioning. The markings are simply one of many normal anatomical variations that make human bodies different from one another.

Throughout history, artists have occasionally emphasized these indentations in sculptures and paintings because they highlight the natural shape of the lower back and pelvis. Today, the feature continues to attract attention in fitness discussions and social media photographs, where people sometimes associate it with athletic appearance or physical attractiveness. Yet medical professionals recognize that these particular lower-back dimples are not a reliable indicator of fertility, circulation, sexual health, or athletic performance. Their presence generally requires no treatment, and there is no specific exercise guaranteed to create them in someone whose natural anatomy does not produce them.

The most important thing to understand is that these two small indentations are usually completely normal and harmless. They do not indicate a hidden medical condition or provide special information about a person’s overall health. They should also be distinguished from a single deep dimple directly over the spine, particularly in an infant, which may occasionally require medical evaluation. For most adults, the paired dimples above the buttocks are simply an ordinary feature of the pelvis and surrounding connective tissues. So if you happen to notice these two little marks on your lower back, there is no reason for alarm. They are another fascinating example of how even the smallest details of human anatomy can have a clear and interesting explanation.
