California New Laws 2024: Income-based Electric Bills

Electric bills for California residents are expected to undergo changes in the upcoming year.

Electricity bills usually correspond to the amount of electricity consumed by a particular household. Following the passage of Assembly Bill 205 last year, California may now potentially implement a system where electricity charges are determined based on income level.

Three of the largest electric utility companies in the state, Southern California Edison Company, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and San Diego Gas & Electric Company, have put forth a proposal. They claim that under this new law, low-income customers could potentially save around $300 per year.

According to the proposal, households in California with an annual income exceeding $180,000 would see an increase of approximately $500 per year on their electricity bills.

Breaking news: SoCal Edison customers may soon see changes to their rates based on income. Here’s a breakdown of the proposed rate restructuring:

  • Above $180,000: $85/month
  • $69,000 – $180,000: $51/month
  • $28,000 – $69,000: $20/month
  • Less than $28,000: $15/month

Officials have announced that the plan will divide monthly bills into a fixed rate and a reduced usage charge based on consumption.

Advocates of the bill see it as a potential remedy for the growing issue of California’s soaring housing costs, which have made it increasingly difficult for moderate and low-income families to afford living in the state. Concerns have been raised by opponents of the law, who fear that it may undermine efforts to promote electricity conservation and potentially increase costs for customers utilizing solar energy.

The California Public Utilities Commission is expected to make a decision on the proposed changes by July 1, 2024. However, officials have noted that it will still take some time before California residents notice any adjustments to their electricity bills.
