These Us Cities Have Called for a Gaza Cease-fire

Resolutions have been signed by multiple U.S. cities, urging President Biden to intervene and call for a cease-fire in Gaza. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has now reached almost four months.

In a recent development, supervisors in San Francisco have given their approval to a resolution that advocates for an extended cease-fire, denouncing both Hamas and the Israeli government. According to The Associated Press, the Biden administration is being urged to take action regarding the release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas since their surprise attack on October 7th. Additionally, there is a call for the delivery of humanitarian aid to assist the displaced civilians in Gaza.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed has chosen not to veto the resolution, but she criticized the board for its decision, stating that it has resulted in a city that is “more angry, more divided, and less safe,” according to the AP. The Minneapolis City Council has approved a resolution with a 9-3-1 vote, urging a cease-fire and the discontinuation of United States funding to the Israeli military.

Mayor Jacob Frey, the city’s sole Jewish elected official, will now determine whether he will veto the resolution. In a report by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, it was stated that Frey criticized the resolution, describing it as “lopsided” in its portrayal of the history of Jewish people.

In November, the Detroit City Council approved a resolution expressing their support for a cease-fire in Gaza. Members have demanded the immediate release of hostages and the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians. Members unanimously agreed that it is unacceptable for any individual to be denied access to basic necessities such as water, food, health care, medical supplies, and energy, according to The Detroit News.

In a recent development, the Oakland City Council in California has approved its resolution on November 27. The city and country have witnessed a disturbing increase in attacks driven by race, religion, and prejudice. These acts, including antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents, have been strongly condemned. The city’s council members have previously addressed global events, but the recent action they have taken is significant and has sparked controversy, according to the Oaklandside.

In a significant development, the Bridgeport City Council has recently made history by being the first group in Connecticut to approve a cease-fire resolution. A member of the Bridgeport Islamic Community Center in Connecticut expressed the significance of the decision, stating that it is intended to be presented to congressmen in order to persuade them to bring it to the attention of the president.

Several cities, including Atlanta, Seattle, Dearborn, Mich., Albany, N.Y., Akron, Ohio, and Providence, R.I., have reportedly passed resolutions that are similar in nature. According to many observers, the purpose behind this action is to exert pressure on Congress and the Biden administration, urging them to advocate for a temporary halt in the ongoing conflict.

In a shift of stance, President Biden has urged the Israeli military to adopt a more measured approach, deviating from his previous commitment to stand by and assist Israel in its efforts to combat Hamas. Furthermore, he has expressed support for initiatives aimed at establishing a two-state solution in the future.

In October, Hamas invaded Israel and caused the death of 1,200 citizens. In response, Israel initiated a counteroffensive that has resulted in significant destruction and loss of life. This has led to heightened tensions in the Middle East and global concerns. The Gaza Health Ministry has reported that the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 25,000 individuals as of Sunday.
