3 Bird Flu Cases has Confirmed in L.A. County

Public health officials have announced the confirmation of three cases of avian flu in Los Angeles County. The announcement was made on X, through the social media platform Twitter.

Three birds, a raven in Eagle Rock, a Western Gull in El Segundo, and a Canada Goose in Alhambra, have tested positive for the virus, according to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory. There have been no reported cases of the virus being detected in domesticated or wild mammals. Public health officials have reported a total of thirty cases between October 2022 and April 2023.

Avian flu has the potential to spread rapidly among various bird populations, such as poultry and pet birds. There is a potential risk of transmission to dogs, cats, or wild mammals, particularly if they consume infected, uncooked birds.

In an effort to curb the spread of the virus, authorities are advising residents to remove bird feeders and communal bird baths, and to ensure that pets are kept away from sick and deceased birds.

Health officials are advising the public to report any recently deceased birds, particularly larger species such as geese, ducks, and shorebirds, to local animal control agencies. This is to facilitate potential collection and testing, as per their recommendations.

As per a news release, it is advised that residents take precautions to prevent wild birds from accessing areas where poultry or pet birds are kept.

According to officials, the transmission of the virus among humans is currently at a low level. However, there have been rare cases where people have been infected by the virus. In October 2022, an outbreak of avian flu was initially reported in L.A. County, adding to the nationwide concern.
