Early Saturday morning, police in Marion County, Indiana, rescued multiple camels and zebras from a burning trailer.
A trailer on Interstate 69 caught fire while transporting the animals. The fire broke out at approximately 2 a.m. local time, according to CBS station WTTV.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office informed CBS News that the animals were unharmed and survived the fire, but the exact cause of the blaze is still unknown. No details regarding the trailer driver were divulged by the police.
Our first responders rescued them quickly and went out of their way to reassure the animals. This is genuine compassion at work!” the sheriff’s office said to CBS News. Facebook was also used by officials to describe what happened.
Officials with the animals are shown in photos released by the sheriff’s office. A cop seems to be taking a selfie with a few of the rescued camels in one photo.
Camels trotting down a dark highway are seen in one video. Along the highway, one could see zebras munching on grass.
Responders put out the fire in the trailer in another snap.
The number of animals rescued was not disclosed by the police.
The animals’ final destination following the rescue and fire is unclear, and neither is the trailer’s intended destination, according to the police.
Following a brief closure to facilitate the rescue, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office said that the interstate has now been reopened.
