but What She Sent Me a Week Later Left My Jaw on the Floor

When my cousin announced she was getting married, I was genuinely happy for her. She sent out a cute “save the date,” and I marked the day immediately. As weeks passed with no official invitation, I reached out politely, just to make sure mine hadn’t gotten lost in the mail.

That’s when she dropped the bomb.

They had decided on a tiny Las Vegas wedding — just ten people, super intimate, super budget-friendly. She sounded apologetic, and honestly, I didn’t take it personally. Weddings are expensive. Guest lists get messy. I told her I understood and wished her the best.

But exactly one week later, another message popped up from her.

It wasn’t an invitation.

It wasn’t a thank-you.

It was a request.

She sent a long paragraph explaining that although I wasn’t invited due to “budget limitations,” she and her fiancé were asking friends and extended family to help sponsor parts of the wedding.

Yes — sponsor. As in pay for it.

And attached was a list — a literal list — of items with prices next to them, like a wedding registry but for their expenses:

• “$250 – Contribute to our photography package.”
• “$150 – Help upgrade our suite.”
• “$75 – Toward my bouquet & floral arrangements.”
• “$50 – Wedding day transportation.”
• “$500 – ‘VIP Gift’: help cover our Vegas helicopter photoshoot.”

At the bottom, she added a cheerful note:
“If you sponsor something, we’ll give you a shout-out during our reception!”

A shout-out. At a wedding I wasn’t even invited to.

I stared at my phone for a solid minute, trying to figure out if it was a joke. But no — she was completely serious. She had removed half the family from the guest list because they were “tight on money,” yet somehow felt comfortable asking those same people to fund the parts of the wedding she didn’t want to pay for.

Later that day, I learned she had sent the exact same message to dozens of people — cousins, coworkers, acquaintances she hadn’t spoken to in years.

Turns out, she didn’t want a small wedding because of money.

She wanted a luxury wedding… paid for by everyone except herself.

And the wildest part?

Her “tiny Vegas ceremony” suddenly ballooned into a full three-day trip complete with spa packages, club tables, designer outfits, and private photoshoots. All while still claiming she couldn’t afford to invite people.

When the family found out what she was doing, the backlash was immediate. People were offended, some were shocked, others were cracking jokes — but not a single person sent her a dime.

The wedding still happened… and according to those ten guests, it was beautiful.

But the rest of us? We’ll always remember the moment she uninvited her own family and then asked them to pay for the privilege of staying home.
