When I first noticed the bright orange extension cord snaking across my lawn like a thief in the night, I genuinely thought I was imagining it. But no — it stretched neatly from my neighbor’s garage straight into the outdoor socket on the back of my house. For a moment I just stared, stunned that someone could be so bold, so casual, so disrespectful. When I knocked on his door, he opened it with a smirk already forming, like he’d been expecting me.

I pointed to the cord. “That’s my electricity you’re using. You’re running it through my meter.”
He shrugged like it meant nothing. “C’mon, it’s only pennies. Don’t be dramatic.” Then he actually laughed — laughed in my face like I was the unreasonable one. I walked back home shaking, partly from anger, partly from the unbelievable nerve of someone who thought my home was his personal charging station. That night, instead of arguing again, I made a decision. The next morning, a brand-new lockable outlet cover was installed — solid metal, tamper-proof, and quite literally neighbor-proof.

For the first time in days, I felt calm. Problem solved… or so I thought.

The following morning, I found a folded note pushed through my letterbox. No envelope. No name. Just a messy, irritated handwriting that made my stomach drop before I even unfolded it. As I read the words, my jaw tightened and my hands began to shake — not out of fear this time, but from a feeling far sharper. A mix of shock… and something that felt a lot like victory.

Because in his own handwriting, my neighbor had finally admitted something I never expected.
